Calligraphic Martial Arts was created by Sifu Eddie Tsang in the ‘70’s based on traditional Chinese martial arts and Chinese calligraphy. It has a history of more than 30 years and he has taught more than a thousand students. He witnessed the difficulties the American students faced when they learned exceptionally long traditional martial arts forms (some of them consist of more than a hundred movements), and was inspired to use some basic Chinese characters and common martial arts terms to teach his students to present (write) them with techniques from various martial arts schools and styles. He adopts the dragon, tiger, snake, monkey, eagle claw, and Wing Chun from Shaolin; and tai chi and ba gua from Wudang. The strokes of the character will reflect basic techniques from a variety of such styles. There are more than 30 completed Calligraphic Forms: from the simple "Gongfu" and "Ten Number" forms to the longer "Use Martial Arts to Students" can perform these forms either with their body movements or with weapons such as the saber, sword, long and short staff. Each form includes both offensive and defensive setups. Students may practice by themselves or conduct a set sparring with one another.
